SHOPIFY CSV TROUBLESHOOTING
A blank cell is not a missing column.
Before a bulk update, distinguish a value you intentionally cleared from information you simply left out. The distinction can matter when overwriting products.
| Fictional edit | Question to answer |
|---|---|
| The Vendor column exists, but North Studio becomes blank. | Did you intend to clear the vendor? |
| The Vendor column is absent from the edited file. | Was omitting that entire column intentional? |
| A product row is absent from the edited file. | Was it excluded, renamed or accidentally dropped? |
Check intent before changing your file
Shopify explains that blank non-required fields can overwrite existing values when overwriting matching products. An omitted non-required column ordinarily leaves its value unchanged, but dependencies between fields still matter. Read the official import instructions for your import mode.
Do not fill every blank automatically: some blanks are deliberate. Instead, compare with your untouched export and confirm each change against the update you meant to make.

Open the fictional example, choose Cleared fields, then read the next-step card. The before value remains visible so you can decide what belongs in the edited file.

- Keep the original export. Never use the only copy as your editing workspace.
- Confirm overwrite versus skip mode. An analysis using the wrong mode can be misleading.
- Review cleared fields and changed columns separately.
- Check handles and option identities. Do not assume absent rows will be deleted.
- Correct your edited copy, select it again, and read Shopify’s import preview.
What this tool does and does not do
Rowpatch compares two full product CSV exports in your browser. It shows before/after values, flags selected issues, and offers review guidance. It can restore selected eligible values from your original export into a separate copy. It does not import the file or automatically repair every issue. It cannot verify your store, images, metafield references or third-party apps.
Files are limited to 5 MB and 5,000 records each, with additional output limits. Unused option columns must still be included for this checker. No account, store connection or payment is needed to use the current beta tools.
