How to compare Shopify product CSV files before importing
A price changed from 24 to 2.40. A vendor field became blank. An option changed from Small to Medium. These are the kinds of differences worth reviewing before a catalog update.
A focused check before a catalog update
Rowpatch uses Shopify product handles and option identities to compare variants, recognizes common current and legacy headers, and explains blank fields separately from missing columns. Review flags lead to a short checklist included in your HTML report. These checks work without installing a store app or connecting store credentials.
Use it for a second review of a full product export before a price update or catalog edit. For live-store imports, scheduled synchronization, backups or rollback, use an appropriate store-management tool. Rowpatch does not perform those operations.
Price-only update walkthrough · Blank fields and omitted columns
1. Keep your original export
Export your current products from Shopify and save an unchanged backup. Make edits in a separate copy. Use full product exports with the handle, Title and all three option-name/value pairs; unused option columns can remain empty.
2. Compare the original and edited files
Place the original in “Before your edits” and the new file in “After your edits.” Rowpatch starts automatically after both load. It compares up to 5,000 records and 5 MB per file in UTF-8 CSV format. It processes the CSV contents inside your browser.
Optional: check your editing goal
If you intended to change prices only, open Comparison settings and choose Prices only. Compared non-price changes and non-price columns added or omitted will be flagged. This can help you notice unintended vendor, SKU or option edits. Image columns and ambiguous or skipped comparisons are not covered.
3. Read the review flags
- Price changes: the default threshold flags changes above 30%. Choose a threshold appropriate to your review.
- Cleared fields: a blank value is different from an omitted column. Review it with your selected import mode.
- Variant differences: the tool matches handles and option identities. Ambiguous matches are flagged without guessing.
- Absent rows: these describe the files only. They are not a Shopify deletion preview.
4. Download and review the report
Read the full report or download HTML and CSV reports. Image columns and image-only rows are excluded. This tool cannot see your live store, apps or inventory locations, so use Shopify’s import preview and retain your backup.
Read Shopify’s official product CSV documentation for current import rules.

From a difference to a next step
Choose your current full product export and edited copy. The next-steps panel includes checks for invalid price formats, compare-at prices, product status values and scientific notation in identifiers, even when those values did not change.
Each card identifies the product and field, with a CSV record number for file checks. Mark items reviewed as you work. This mark does not change your CSV. Use the separate selected-restoration flow if you want to create a copy with eligible original values restored. Edit your own copy and select it again to rerun the checks. Review progress is cleared by a new comparison or refresh.
These are limited checks, not a complete Shopify validator. Detailed comparison notes and downloaded reports are in English. The interface and action guidance support English, Korean, Japanese and Spanish. No original product values are translated.
Rules are informed by Shopify’s product CSV documentation and common import issues. Store state and import results cannot be verified here.
If a check stops
Large difference sets can exceed the report limit even when each file is under 5 MB. Compare smaller matching groups of complete products; keep every variant and required column for those products. The tool stops instead of silently showing a partial report. The output limits are 10,000 differences or about one million characters of difference details; edited-file issues have a separate matching limit.
Use Stop check to cancel processing, or Retry selected files after an error. A background checker is required so a slow comparison does not block the page. If it cannot start, use a current browser. Keep the page open until you have saved the result: comparison files and review progress are not stored on our server.
Check a planned percentage and restore selected values
In settings, enable an exact price change, enter a percentage and rounding precision, and optionally list exact product handles. The rule checks base Price on uniquely matched variants, including unchanged prices. It excludes compare-at and market prices, new variants and ambiguous identities. Protected Title, SKU and product/option identity checks are optional.
Tick eligible values in the differences table, preview the edited and original values, then choose Create restored copy & recheck. Up to 100 selections are supported per copy. Only supported fields with an unambiguous original value can be restored. Handles, option identities, missing rows, unsupported fields and formula-like original values are not restored.
The new CSV retains the edited file’s headers, row order and unselected values. CSV quoting, line endings and empty-record formatting may be normalized. This is a product file, not the differences report; its values are not prefixed with spreadsheet-escaping apostrophes. If formula-like cells remain, open it as text in spreadsheet software. Review the automatically rerun checks before importing. Undo last restoration returns the in-memory edited file to its preceding version.
Recheck counts compare rule findings under the same settings. They are not proof that an import will succeed. Changing the baseline or settings resets the comparison of findings. No files or restoration history are saved on the server.
